The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), in collaboration with the international medical charity CardioStart International, has successfully completed a five-day medical mission, performing a series of complex heart surgeries on adults with life-threatening conditions.

Held between 16 and 20 June, the initiative brought together a team of local cardiothoracic specialists and visiting experts from CardioStart—a non-profit organisation that provides heart surgery and training in underserved regions around the world.

UGMC officials say the mission marks a significant milestone in the hospital’s efforts to expand access to advanced cardiovascular care in Ghana. A number of highly technical procedures were carried out during the mission, giving patients a new chance at life.

The Ministry of Health and the University of Ghana have both commended the medical teams for their commitment and expertise, describing the mission as an example of high-impact international cooperation in the health sector.

Beyond the surgeries themselves, the mission also served as a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, with UGMC staff gaining practical experience alongside their international counterparts.

Hospital administrators say the programme reinforces UGMC’s growing status as a leading centre for cardiothoracic care in West Africa and underlines the importance of sustainable partnerships in improving health outcomes.

CardioStart International has led similar missions in various countries, with a focus on delivering urgent care and building local capacity through training and mentorship.
