Hassan Ayariga, the presidential candidate for the All People’s Congress (APC), has announced his intention to abolish the current metering system for water and electricity if elected. Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Ayariga described the existing system as ineffective and unfair to Ghanaians.

“There will be no meter for water and electricity in an APC government. The metering system is not effective and is short-changing Ghanaians,” Ayariga stated.

Outlining his policy proposals, Ayariga emphasized the need for Ghanaians to take ownership of their country’s development and stressed the importance of transparency in leadership. He further pledged to prioritize local businesses and citizens in his administration.

Among his key promises are plans to reduce the number of taxes from 32 to 5, introduce a national development plan, and implement a national data system. Additionally, he vowed to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi and increase the minimum daily wage from 18 cedis to 300 cedis.

Ayariga also proposed introducing a two-week salary payment cycle as a measure to curb corruption, along with a free port policy that would allow duty-free importation. He also called for an “economic lockdown” to boost local productivity, signaling his focus on reducing Ghana’s reliance on imports.

These ambitious policies aim to tackle the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians, particularly local traders and businesses struggling with high taxes and inflation.
