Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former managing director of Ghana’s state-owned GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, was taken into custody Sunday by national security operatives amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial improprieties during his tenure.

Authorities apprehended Mr. Jumah at his residence in Kumasi on the evening of June 29, according to individuals familiar with the matter. He was later transported by government vehicle to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, where he remained in custody as of Monday.

The arrest follows an earlier operation on May 15, when security officials sought to reclaim state-owned vehicles believed to be in Mr. Jumah’s possession. He was reportedly not at home during that attempt.

Sources close to the investigation say Mr. Jumah is being probed for multiple allegations, including the unauthorized disposal of government assets and irregularities surrounding the acquisition of official vehicles while he headed the distillery.

Neither Mr. Jumah nor his legal representatives have commented publicly on the arrest or the ongoing investigation. Officials at GIHOC and the Ministry of Trade and Industry declined to respond to requests for comment.

GIHOC Distilleries, one of Ghana’s oldest beverage manufacturers, has been under increased scrutiny in recent months following reports of governance lapses and concerns about asset management.
