Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has been re-elected president of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), extending his leadership of the country’s largest media body for another term following a decisive victory at the polls.

Mr. Dwumfour garnered 445 votes, representing 64.49% of the total valid ballots cast, defeating his sole challenger, Charles Yao Mawusi, who secured 245 votes, or 35.51%, according to official election results released over the weekend.

First elected in 2022, Mr. Dwumfour’s renewed mandate follows a tenure marked by outspoken advocacy on press freedom, journalist welfare, and institutional reform. His campaign focused on continuity, promising to intensify efforts to improve working conditions, negotiate for fairer remuneration across newsrooms, and strengthen media professionalism amid rising economic and political pressures.

Under his leadership, the GJA has sought deeper collaboration with stakeholders across government, civil society, and international partners, while navigating complex challenges facing the media industry, including disinformation, financial instability, and threats to journalistic independence.

Mr. Dwumfour’s second term begins as Ghana’s media sector faces mounting calls for reform and increased protections for journalists in a shifting political landscape ahead of the country’s 2024 general elections.
