Prominent cleric Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has called on President John Dramani Mahama to seize his return to power as an opportunity to enact bold reforms, stabilize the country’s economy, and chart a national development strategy that transcends partisan cycles.

Speaking on  Tuesday,July 1,at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held at the State House in Accra, the founder of Action Chapel International urged Mahama to use his second presidential term to deliver lasting economic impact—starting with the country’s embattled currency.

“Mr. President, within three years, make a difference. Impact this world and change the narrative of Ghana. Let the Cedi thrive under your leadership… and let things get better and better,” Duncan-Williams said, drawing applause from political, religious, and civil society leaders in attendance.

His remarks come amid continued concerns about macroeconomic instability in the West African nation, where inflation, debt servicing costs, and cedi depreciation have weighed on growth prospects. Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, returned to office with promises to restore fiscal discipline and rebuild confidence in state institutions.

Duncan-Williams emphasized the need for a unified, values-based identity rooted in faith and patriotism, warning that entrenched political divisions risk undermining national progress.

He also advocated for the adoption of a long-term, bipartisan development plan—similar to those in China, India, and Dubai—that would extend beyond political tenures. “Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, a national agenda will be established to compel all stakeholders to follow that agenda,” he said.

The annual prayer event, themed around thanksgiving and hope, gathered leaders across sectors to pray for peace and direction for the country as it navigates a delicate economic and political moment.
