President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s top law enforcement officials to accelerate investigations into electoral violence linked to the 2024 general elections, as his administration faces mounting pressure to deliver accountability and restore confidence in the democratic process.

Speaking at the closing session of a Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue hosted by the National Peace Council in Koforidua, Mahama directed the Inspector General of Police to expedite inquiries and bring those responsible for the violence to justice.

“The IGP must expedite investigations into these acts of electoral violence and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Mahama said. “The Attorney General is also preparing a report to Cabinet for appropriate compensation to be provided to victims and families affected by the violence.”

The dialogue convened political leaders, civil society representatives, and peace-building experts to review the 2024 elections and evaluate measures to prevent future unrest. Several polling and collation centers across the country witnessed violent incidents during the vote, some of which led to injuries and fatalities, sparking national outcry.

Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to institutional reforms and accountability, stating that “impunity will not be tolerated.”

The president also pointed to the 2019 Vigilantism and Related Offences Act as a step forward in curbing politically motivated violence, noting the disbandment of vigilante groups as a contributing factor in reducing electoral tensions.

“The passage of Act 999 was a necessary step that has helped mitigate politically driven attacks during elections,” he said.
