He  New Patriotic Party (NPP) said Tuesday it would boycott a parliamentary rerun ordered by the Electoral Commission in parts of the capital’s Ablekuma North constituency, intensifying political tensions over a contested parliamentary seat from the 2024 general elections.

At a press briefing in Accra, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong rejected the Commission’s decision to rerun the vote in 19 polling stations, calling it an attempt to subvert the will of the electorate. The party maintains that its candidate, Akua Afriyie, secured a legitimate victory and should be declared the winner without further delay.

“We will not be part of any rerun in Ablekuma North,” Mr. Kodua said. “This is unjust and goes against the facts presented throughout the electoral process.”

The Electoral Commission has cited irregularities in the collation of results—specifically the failure of some Presiding Officers to validate scanned result sheets—as grounds for the rerun. But the NPP contends that all relevant documentation was signed off by its agents and Commission officials at the polling station level, rendering the rerun unnecessary.

The dispute has escalated into a broader standoff between the NPP and the Commission, with the party warning that continued delays in confirming Ms. Afriyie’s election amount to a breach of the electorate’s mandate.

“The people of Ablekuma North spoke clearly, and their voice must be respected,” Mr. Kodua said.

The controversy comes amid heightened political sensitivity in the wake of Ghana’s tightly contested December 2024 elections, which saw several parliamentary seats decided by narrow margins and, in some cases, challenged in court or by the Commission itself.
