The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to support efforts to retool the hospital with modern medical equipment.

He noted that the delivery of cutting-edge healthcare services at KATH has been hampered by obsolete equipment and the absence of key facilities.

“Currently, most critical equipment such as CT scans, MRI machines, fluoroscopy units, oxygen plants, and central sterilisation systems are either down or functioning with faults. Vital equipment such as a Catheterisation Laboratory (CATHLAB) and a mammogram are also not available at all,” Dr. Baidoo revealed.

Speaking during a meeting with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, and his management team at the bank’s headquarters in Accra, Dr. Baidoo explained that the government alone cannot provide the required funding to address the equipment gaps. He therefore appealed for corporate partnerships to help procure life-saving equipment to enhance specialist care at the facility.

The meeting formed part of ongoing engagements by the KATH CEO to rally state and corporate support to bridge the hospital’s equipment and infrastructure deficit.

As Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital, KATH serves as a critical healthcare facility, receiving cases from 12 out of the 16 regions due to its strategic location and range of specialist services. However, despite its skilled workforce, the hospital struggles with limited resources to meet growing demand for advanced care.

BoG Pledges Consideration

Dr. Asiama acknowledged the essential role of KATH in the country’s healthcare delivery system and assured that the bank would give serious consideration to the request.

“We will review the list of critical equipment submitted and take a firm decision on possible support to enable the hospital improve its services to the public,” he stated.
