Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has urged Parliament to summon the Minister for the Interior for a closed-door briefing following a recent surge in violent killings across the country.

Addressing the House on Friday, July 25, Annoh-Dompreh described the situation as alarming and a matter of national security, stressing that bodies of missing persons are being discovered only days after their disappearance.

It is very sad today, our colleague related a sad matter—killings of innocent citizens—and Speaker, I say this with a heavy heart. We have been reading news of people going missing, and the next day or two, their bodies are found. We’ve read a number of them,” he stated.

Invoking Order 60, he requested that the Speaker convene a closed session with the Interior Minister and if necessary, the National Security Minister— so MPs can receive a full briefing on the killings.

“Even yesterday, we had two killings again in the Ashanti Region. Even today, it has happened again. Then we can have a closed session for him to brief us. We may also have some good suggestions,” he added.

Annoh-Dompreh stressed that lawmakers may hold crucial intelligence from their constituencies that could assist security agencies in tackling the issue:

We are representing various constituencies, and Members of Parliament may be carrying unique and diverse information which could aid the work and operation of the Minister.” He noted.

He concluded by insisting that Parliament must not overlook the growing threat, calling for swift action to protect lives across the country.
