FDA Halts Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Production Over Safety Risks

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, citing serious health and safety violations at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited facility.

The move, announced in an August 3 statement, follows a nationwide recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix and specific batches of the product in 380g and 1.05kg pouches.

The decision was triggered by numerous consumer complaints and an FDA investigation that uncovered poor maintenance of key machinery and inadequate safety monitoring. Faulty sealing on canned products was found to have caused contamination, while bloated pouches and traces of mould were detected in some packs.

“These breaches present unacceptable risks to public health. We have acted swiftly to suspend production and remove affected products from the market,” the FDA said.

This is not the first time Nutrifoods has faced regulatory action — in January 2025, the company was barred from manufacturing the tomato mix over similar concerns, raising questions about its compliance record.

The FDA has also launched an internal review to assess whether lapses occurred in its oversight, promising “decisive action” if failings are found.

Retailers, wholesalers, and consumers are urged to cooperate with the recall. Anyone with affected products should return them to the point of purchase and report any adverse health effects.

Nutrifoods has confirmed it will comply with the recall directive for the specified batches.
