Ghana’s Mahama Pledges Full Implementation of Election Violence Report

President John Mahama has pledged to fully implement the findings of a report into election-related violence during Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections.

Speaking during a meeting with executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), President Mahama said the report identifies all individuals affected by the violence, along with the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

“Last week, I received the investigative report on the two incidents. It details and catalogues everyone who was affected by the violence and the circumstances that led to it,” he said.

The report has been handed over to the Attorney-General for further review. President Mahama said those found to be responsible could face prosecution.

“The Attorney-General will review it and, where necessary, hold people culpable and bring them to book,” he added.

The President also announced plans to compensate victims, including families of those who lost their lives and individuals who suffered injuries during the unrest.

“What is the adequate compensation that we can give to people like that?” he asked, signalling that the government is working to determine fair reparation.

The violence during the two election cycles drew national and international concern, with several civil society groups and observers calling for accountability and reform.

Mr Mahama also highlighted the impact of the violence on journalists, many of whom were reportedly attacked while carrying out their duties.
