Ghana’s National Identification Authority (NIA) is opening its doors to a younger demographic — children aged 6 to 14 — for Ghana Card registration at all Premium Centres across the country.

The announcement, made in a statement dated Wednesday, September 10, 2025, marks a significant expansion of the NIA’s mandate to register every Ghanaian, home and abroad, with a secure and verifiable national identity.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to build a robust and inclusive National Identity Register (NIR) that starts tracking citizens from early childhood. But there’s a catch: registration at Premium Centres comes at a cost — GHC310 — the same fee charged for premium services for adults.

What Parents Need to Know

To register their children, parents or legal guardians must present one of the following:

  • A valid Ghanaian passport of the child
  • An original birth certificate
  • A Ghana Card holder parent or guardian who can vouch for the child

The NIA is also modernizing its services. Starting Monday, September 15, 2025, all 11 remaining Premium Centres will adopt the authority’s online registration and booking system, allowing applicants to schedule appointments in advance — a move expected to significantly ease the process and reduce wait times.

What’s Next?

The Authority assured the public that Ghana Cards for children already registered will be issued soon. It also hinted at an upcoming expansion of the service to all NIA District Offices in the coming weeks, promising wider access and convenience for families across the country.
