Alhaji Sofo Azorka, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on a senior official from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the recent Akwatia by-election.
According to a statement from the Eastern Regional Police Command, Azorka was picked up in Tamale on Wednesday, September 10, as part of ongoing investigations into a reported altercation with Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman.
The alleged incident took place on September 2 during the by-election in Akwatia—a vote already under scrutiny for heightened political tension and pockets of violence.
Police say Azorka has since provided a caution statement and has been granted bail. He is required to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m., where he is expected to be arraigned in court.
In the statement, law enforcement officials called for calm and pledged a “thorough investigation,” promising to keep the public updated as the case unfolds.
The Akwatia by-election has become a flashpoint in Ghanaian politics, highlighting the increasingly combative nature of the lead-up to the 2026 general elections.
