Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has sworn in two newly elected Members of Parliament following recent by-elections in the Akwatia and Tamale Central constituencies.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo will now represent Akwatia after securing 18,199 votes in a competitive contest. He takes over the seat formerly held by Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away earlier this year.

In Tamale Central, Professor Alidu Seidu was declared the winner of the by-election after running unopposed. He replaces the late MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash on 6 August.

Speaking after administering the oaths of allegiance and office, Mr Bagbin congratulated the two MPs and reminded them of the responsibilities that come with their new roles.

“You have sworn an oath to serve not only your constituents but the entire nation. Let your service be marked by integrity, accountability, and respect for the dignity of this House,” he said.

Both MPs represent the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which now holds 185 seats in Parliament. The party’s position has been further strengthened by the support of four Independent MPs who have chosen to do business with the NDC caucus.
