The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a warning to heads of public schools, instructing them to stop collecting unauthorised fees in the name of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) dues.

In a statement released on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyí, the GES said it had received reports that some second-cycle institutions were demanding levies without the required approval.

The Service made it clear that no school is permitted to collect PTA or development levies without prior authorisation.

It explained that for basic schools, such approval must come from the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) through the District Director of Education, while second-cycle institutions must seek authorisation from the Regional Director of Education.

The GES also emphasised that even when such levies are approved, payment must remain voluntary. It added that no student should be denied access to services or educational benefits because of non-payment.

The statement further stated that heads of schools, teachers, and GES staff are not to be involved in collecting PTA levies. Fundraising activities, it said, are the responsibility of elected PTA executives.

The GES has directed all Regional and District Directors to ensure strict compliance with the directive and report any violations for immediate disciplinary action.
