Weekend Closures Planned On George Bush Highway As Major Interchange Expansion Continues

Drivers who rely on the N1 — widely known as the George Bush Highway — should brace for periodic weekend traffic disruptions as authorities push ahead with a major expansion project near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange.

The Ghana Highway Authority announced Friday that it will introduce a revised traffic management plan to allow contractors to carry out crucial construction work on the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge.

The changes come after an earlier attempt to close the Madina-bound lane earlier this week triggered severe congestion along the corridor. Thousands of motorists were left stranded in gridlock for hours, prompting the contractor to temporarily suspend the closure.

Under the new arrangement, northbound traffic from Accra toward Madina will be shut down intermittently during key construction operations involving the launching of T-beams — structural elements used in bridge building. Each closure is expected to last between two and four hours.

The measures will take effect on Saturday, March 14, 2026, and will continue on weekends and public holidays for the next four months.

To keep vehicles moving during those periods, authorities say the southbound carriageway from Madina to Accra will be reconfigured to carry traffic in both directions. The road will operate as two lanes each way instead of the usual four-lane configuration.

Officials are urging motorists to avoid the construction area if possible, follow traffic signage and instructions from officers on duty, and plan journeys ahead of time to reduce delays.

Several alternative routes have also been outlined to help ease pressure on the busy N1 corridor:
Drivers heading from Liberation Road toward Tema are advised to use the Airport Bypass to Flowerpot Junction before merging onto the motorway toward Tema.

Those traveling from Liberation Road to East Legon can pass through the Airport Bypass and the East Legon Underpass to reach their destination.
Motorists moving from J.J. Rawlings Road toward Liberation Road via the George Bush Highway are encouraged to turn at Gulf House toward GIMPA Road, continue through the Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction, and then rejoin the highway past Villagio toward Liberation Road.

Drivers traveling from Tema to Liberation Road should continue along the N1 through the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, turn left at the Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction onto North Airport Road, pass the Africa Regent Hotel, and proceed to Liberation Road.

The Ghana Highway Authority says the temporary measures are designed to reduce delays, improve safety, and keep traffic moving while work continues on the large-scale infrastructure project.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and count on the cooperation of the public,” the authority said in a statement.
