The  Ministry of Health said it has secured financial clearance to pay thousands of health professionals undertaking mandatory service, a move aimed at clearing salary backlogs and introducing a monthly payment system.

In a statement dated March 13 and signed by spokesperson Tony Goodman, the ministry said approval from the Ministry of Finance covers allowances and salaries for 14,279 rotation nurses and midwives, along with 637 medical and dental house officers nationwide.

The nurses eligible for payment include Registered General Nurses, Registered Midwives, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Registered Community Health Nurses and Registered Public Health Nurses who began their rotations last year and are expected to complete them this year.

Financial clearance was also granted for 637 medical and dental house officers who graduated from public and private institutions, passed the Medical and Dental Council examinations and were inducted into service on Nov. 12, 2025.

The ministry said the approvals will settle outstanding payments from previous years and support a new policy to ensure that health professionals on mandatory service receive their allowances monthly.

Under the previous arrangement, allowances for some cadres—including nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals—were accumulated and paid at the end of the service period. The ministry said the new system is intended to streamline payments and prevent future backlogs.
