Ghana’s police said two suspected armed robbers were fatally shot following a gun battle with officers after a mobile-money vendor was attacked in the port city of Tema.

In a statement dated April 13, the Tema Regional Police Command said the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Monday in Community 5. The suspects allegedly targeted a mobile-money (MoMo) operator at Aba Fosuah Plaza, posing as customers before attempting to steal cash.

According to preliminary findings, one suspect, riding as a passenger on a motorbike, approached the vendor under the pretense of making a withdrawal. As the vendor retrieved her phone to process the transaction, the suspect drew a pistol and demanded a bag containing cash. A struggle ensued involving both the passenger and the rider, during which the passenger shot the vendor in the leg. The assailants then seized the cash and fled on the motorbike.

Police said a nearby patrol team, deployed for security duties at an event, responded to a distress call and pursued the suspects. The suspects allegedly opened fire on officers near a junction in Community 6, close to the Smart Hotel.
Officers returned fire, striking both men, who fell from the motorbike. They were transported to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival, authorities said.

The bodies have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
