Police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the killing of a University of Cape Coast student whose body was discovered on a beach in the Central Region last week.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Michael Mensah, was taken into custody on Monday evening following what police described as intelligence-led operations conducted by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.
The victim, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a second-year student at the University of Cape Coast, was found dead at Hutchland Beach under circumstances that remain under investigation.
According to preliminary findings, Mr. Mensah picked up Ms. Avinu from Ayensu Plaza, near the university’s hostel enclave, on June 11 at approximately 6:48 p.m. Investigators believe he later drove her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.
Police said one of Ms. Avinu’s roommates told investigators that the student had called to say she was going out to meet an acquaintance. She reportedly left her residence dressed casually but failed to return, raising concerns among friends and relatives.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive and said investigations are continuing. Mr. Mensah, who reportedly claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, remains in police custody and is assisting investigators.
Police said additional details would be released as the investigation progresses.
