This election is about the economy, not useless things—Mahama to Bawumia.

Ghana’s opposition leader, John Dramani Mahama, has urged the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to address key economic issues, accusing him of deflecting with “irrelevant” responses.

Speaking at a rally in the Savelugu Constituency on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama criticised Dr. Bawumia’s recent response to his questions on the economy, noting that the vice president had replied with 50 counter-questions rather than addressing the country’s pressing economic concerns.

“It seems our vice president has simply memorised a list of responses, as if reciting poems from primary school,” Mr. Mahama said, calling Dr. Bawumia’s questions on topics such as compost plants a “distraction.”

Mr. Mahama referenced the slogan used by Bill Clinton’s campaign in the 1992 U.S. election, stressing that Ghana’s upcoming election should focus on economic challenges. “This election is about the economy. It’s not about who built compost plants or any other irrelevant issues,” he said.

The exchange highlights the intensifying rivalry between the two leading candidates as Ghana’s election approaches, with both sides seeking to frame the debate around issues they believe matter most to voters.
