Ghana’s Supreme Court has adjourned until November 11 the case challenging the removal of four Members of Parliament who ran as independents in the recent general election.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has instructed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to submit necessary documents by Wednesday, November 6. This directive follows a request from the Speaker’s lawyer, Thaddeus Sory, who asked for more time to consult with Mr. Bagbin to clarify details regarding the case timeline.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court rejected an application by the Speaker to overturn a previous court ruling that had suspended his declaration concerning the MPs in question. The challenge originates from a suit filed by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who disputes the Speaker’s decision on the MPs’ status.

In court, the Speaker’s legal team argued that the Supreme Court did not have jurisdiction over this matter. However, after hearing arguments from the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Court upheld its earlier decision, dismissing the Speaker’s appeal as lacking in merit.

“We have reviewed the application and found that the grounds presented do not hold merit,” Chief Justice Torkornoo stated.
