Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has announced plans to introduce Ghana’s first national credit scoring system, set to launch on November 7.
Dr. Bawumia, who has made economic transformation through digitalisation a key focus of his campaign, said the initiative would help make it easier for Ghanaians to access credit, improving their ability to acquire goods and services on a payment plan and ultimately enhancing living standards.
This credit scoring system would make Ghana the second African country to implement such a system, following in the footsteps of South Africa. Dr. Bawumia made the announcement during a campaign rally in Nyinahin, Atwima Mponua District, marking the start of a 15-day tour of the Ashanti Region.
He noted that Ghana’s digital infrastructure is already in place to support the credit scoring system, including the Ghana Card, digital addressing system, and mobile money interoperability. According to him, these elements would facilitate the credit system’s rollout, enabling wider access to financial services across the country.
Looking beyond digital initiatives, Dr. Bawumia also outlined plans for the redevelopment of Ghana’s railway network, specifically the Kumasi-Takoradi line. This route, which would include Nyinahin, is expected to support the transport of bauxite from a planned mining site to the Takoradi port, bolstering economic activity in the region.
