The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to build processing plants in Ghana’s crop-rich districts as part of a broader effort to boost the country’s agricultural sector. Speaking on the first day of his tour in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted agriculture as the top priority of his proposed administration, should he secure the presidency.

The initiative would target districts with strong agricultural production, with the goal of adding value to locally grown crops and creating more income opportunities for farmers. “My government’s number one priority will be agriculture because the majority of Ghanaians—over 60%—are farmers,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “When farmers are financially secure, Ghana will thrive.”

The proposed processing plants would be complemented by district agricultural mechanization centres, providing farmers access to modern equipment. Dr. Bawumia pledged financial support, access to technology, improved irrigation, and technical expertise to support farmers under his government.

Building on the success of the existing Planting for Food and Jobs programme, Dr. Bawumia aims to focus on competitive crop cultivation, with plans to establish facilities to process and add value to these crops.

The Ashanti Region stop was the final leg of his national tour. During his visit, he also addressed the region’s role in Ghana’s mining industry, particularly in Atwima Mponua, an area known for its mining activities. Dr. Bawumia assured the community that his administration would support responsible mining practices. He outlined plans for the Geological Survey to develop precise mapping tools to help miners locate gold deposits more efficiently, minimising environmental disruption and reducing the need for speculative excavation.

The NPP flagbearer also promised to ensure that all mining operations are properly licensed to protect miners from harassment while promoting environmentally responsible practices.
