Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged the Supreme Court to handle the Human Rights and Family Values Bill—commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill—with the same urgency as recent rulings on parliamentary vacancies.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Mr. Bagbin highlighted the need for consistency in the judiciary, pressing the Court to prioritize the bill, which has been awaiting review for almost a year.

“I respectfully call on the Supreme Court to apply the same swiftness with which they handled the ex parte application regarding the president’s refusal to accept the Human Rights and Family Values Bill, which has been pending for nearly a year,” Mr. Bagbin said.

He expressed frustration with perceived inconsistencies in judicial timeliness, pointing to the Court’s swift action in suspending four Members of Parliament for 12 weeks, while matters concerning representation in constituencies like Assin North and SALL have faced delays.

As Parliament prepares to reconvene on November 7, 2024, Mr. Bagbin said he has directed the Clerk of Parliament to forward the bill to the president for final assent.
