The National Media Commission (NMC) has endorsed the launch of the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition, established to tackle the threat of misinformation and disinformation as the country approaches its general elections.

The Coalition, formed by civil society groups such as the Media Foundation for West Africa, Dubawa, and FactSpace West Africa, aims to safeguard Ghana’s democratic stability by ensuring information integrity.

In a statement issued on Sunday, November 10, NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong congratulated the organizations involved, describing the Coalition as a vital step toward protecting Ghana’s information landscape in the run-up to the election.

“The flood of harmful information observed from both internal and external sources in recent weeks is deeply concerning,” Sarpong said. “By uniting their collective expertise and resources, the Coalition has significantly strengthened Ghana’s defenses against disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI).”

The NMC has called on all stakeholders to support peaceful elections by collaborating with the Coalition. The Commission also announced plans to launch the Ghana Media Watch App on November 14, a monitoring tool designed to support the Coalition’s efforts in combating disinformation.
