The National Chairman of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has publicly accused Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs, of partisanship, alleging that he is actively campaigning for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During a campaign event in the Asante Akim Central Constituency on Sunday, Mr. Nketia criticised the chief’s involvement in politics, claiming that he has undermined the traditional neutrality of his office. According to Mr. Nketia, the chief has allegedly been seen wearing NPP-branded clothing and supporting the party in his hometown.

“The president of the National House of Chiefs is supposed to remain impartial,” Mr. Nketia told a gathering in Odumase. “Instead of using his role to mediate national issues, he’s reportedly showing support for the NPP, which could jeopardise both the credibility of the House and the country’s democratic values.”

He further questioned why the House of Chiefs president has not publicly criticised the government or addressed ongoing issues in parliament, suggesting that his perceived alignment with the ruling party could compromise traditional authority and influence in national affairs.

The accusations come as political tensions rise in the lead-up to the country’s upcoming elections, with both the NDC and NPP vying for increased public support.
