Ghana’s Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on both the Minority in Parliament and the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, to respect the recent Supreme Court ruling that overturned the Speaker’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin had announced the vacancies of the seats held by Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), sparking significant controversy within the legislature. In response, Afenyo-Markin petitioned the Supreme Court to reverse the ruling and reinstate the affected Members of Parliament.

On Tuesday, November 12, a panel led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo sided with Afenyo-Markin, effectively overturning the Speaker’s declaration. Speaking after the ruling, Afenyo-Markin emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law and democratic principles.

“We urge all parties, including the Speaker, to respect the court’s decision,” he said, stressing the need for mutual respect and the stability of Ghana’s democratic process. “The NPP has chosen the path of peace and the country must follow that example.”

Afenyo-Markin reiterated his party’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and urged for continued respect for Ghana’s legal institutions to maintain national unity.
