Ghana’s former president and current National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has renewed a promise to build a new national theatre in Kumasi, pledging to support the country’s creative industry should his party win the upcoming elections.

Speaking to creative industry stakeholders in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mr. Mahama stressed the importance of investing in the sector and outlined plans to develop a dedicated space for content creators in the Ashanti region.

“We made this pledge in our 2020 manifesto, and we have not abandoned it,” he said. “If the NDC returns to power, we will build Ghana’s second national theatre here in Kumasi.”

Mahama also highlighted the need to modernise the existing National Theatre in Accra, which was built in the early 1990s with Chinese support under the administration of President Jerry Rawlings. He said the facility has fallen into disrepair and no longer meets the needs of Ghana’s growing creative community.

“The National Theatre’s curtains can’t be drawn, and the stage is in poor condition,” he noted. “It’s time for a full rehabilitation to make it a true creative hub for artists nationwide.”

Mahama’s comments reflect the NDC’s commitment to the arts, with the former president emphasising that significant investment is needed to fully realise Ghana’s cultural potential.
