The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Jacobs-Abbey Global Institute for Leadership Studies (JAGILS). He received the prestigious award on November 9, 2024, at the institute’s Annual Gala and Awards Dinner in Alexandria, Virginia, USA.
Under the theme “Transforming Learners into Leaders,” Speaker Bagbin addressed the gathering, emphasizing the urgent need for leaders who not only understand today’s challenges but are prepared for the future. “We live in an era where global challenges require leaders who are knowledgeable, intelligent, and capable of seeing into the future,” he said, noting that sustainable change hinges on leaders who possess both skills and vision.
Bagbin, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics with decades of public service, has been a tireless advocate for nurturing transformative leadership. His career spans roles as a Member of Parliament, Minister of State, and now Speaker of Parliament, underscoring his commitment to empowering future generations.
“His dedication to empowering learners and transforming them into leaders is truly inspirational,” said Ms. Juliana Ama Kplorfia, Chairperson of the JAGILS Board of Trustees. The institute’s Board of Trustees, recognizing his contributions to education and leadership, unanimously selected him for the award, the organization’s highest honor.
During the ceremony, Speaker Bagbin presented a citation from the Office of the Speaker of Parliament of Ghana to JAGILS’s Executive Director, Professor Dr. Samuel Jacobs-Abbey, and honored other key figures in global leadership, including Dr. Joan Henry-Fields and Dr. Nina L. Meyerhof.
Reflecting on his own path from learner to leader, Bagbin highlighted education’s role in fostering self-reliance, innovation, and empowerment. “Education has always been more than acquiring knowledge; it is a pathway to self-reliance, innovation, and empowerment,” he said. “Together, our collaboration has the potential to redefine what it means to educate a generation.”
Speaker Bagbin’s remarks were a rallying call for leaders around the world to build an educational system that nurtures intellectual, moral, and ethical growth. “We must aim to create a future where the next generation—be it in Accra or Washington—will emerge as thought leaders, problem-solvers, and global citizens,” he added.
His recognition at the JAGILS Awards Gala underscores his legacy of championing education as a transformative force and his enduring commitment to empowering individuals to lead positive change in an increasingly complex world.
