The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has raised alarms over the impact that fake news and disinformation could have on the upcoming general election, scheduled for December 7. Officials warn that misinformation could undermine voter confidence and pose a risk to a peaceful election process.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, Director of Training at the EC, highlighted the issue during a media interview on Tuesday, November 12, stressing the potential for unchecked false information to create confusion, incite tension, and harm the election’s credibility.

To address these risks, the EC is working to bolster its communication channels, aiming to provide accurate information promptly to the public. Dr. Quaicoo also urged citizens to rely on verified sources for election updates and report any unverified or suspicious information they encounter.

“My greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation,” Dr. Quaicoo stated, pointing to both traditional and social media as frequent sources of unverified reports. “People may even circulate videos that have no connection to Ghana’s election,” he warned.

The EC continues to emphasize the importance of verifying information before it is shared, encouraging the public to play a proactive role in preventing the spread of disinformation in the crucial days leading up to the election.
