Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Gets Second Term as WTO Director-General

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has secured a second term in office.

A former finance minister of Nigeria, she brings extensive experience in global trade and finance. On September 16, 2024, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed her willingness to serve another four-year term, and the WTO began the process of selecting its director-general on October 8, 2024.

The nomination period, which closed on November 8, 2024, saw no other candidates put forward, ensuring her reappointment.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala first took office as WTO Director-General on March 1, 2021, marking a historic moment as she became the first woman and the first African to hold the position. Her leadership has earned her widespread recognition, including being named one of Fortune’s 50 Greatest World Leaders in 2015 and being listed among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in both 2014 and 2021.
