John Mahama, flagbearer of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced plans to halt the National Buffer Stock’s food supply to Senior High Schools (SHSs) if he wins the 2024 elections.

Speaking in Asawinso, in the Sefwi Wiawso constituency of the Western North Region, Mr. Mahama criticised the current government’s food supply practices following allegations of malpractice. He referenced claims made by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, that around 22,000 bags of expired rice were repackaged and distributed to schools.

The former president described the situation as unacceptable and vowed to decentralise school feeding programmes under his administration. According to him, this move would allow individual school authorities to purchase food locally, boosting local economies and preventing incidents like the distribution of expired goods.

“We have learned that expired rice was repackaged to conceal its true state and sent to our secondary schools. This is why the next NDC government will stop centralised food supply. Instead, funds will be directly allocated to schools like Asawinso Senior High, enabling them to buy food from local markets,” he said.

Mr. Mahama added that the proposed policy would enhance efficiency and transparency in school feeding programmes across the country.
