Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to transition the country to solar energy as a key strategy to lower electricity costs and ease the burden on citizens.

Speaking during a campaign tour in the Asante Akim South constituency on Saturday, 16 November, Dr Bawumia described the high cost of electricity as a major concern linked to Ghana’s reliance on imported oil and gas for power generation.

“The rising electricity bills are a result of our dependence on oil and gas imports. My government will prioritise solar energy, creating solar farms in all districts to reduce electricity costs by 50%,” he said.

The Vice President also noted that Ghana’s abundant sunlight and existing technology make the transition to solar energy both feasible and necessary.

As part of his campaign, Dr Bawumia has emphasised reducing the cost of living, growing Ghanaian businesses, and alleviating household expenses.

Meanwhile, the Obogumanhene, Nana Owusu Ampehone, praised the NPP government for its Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, describing it as transformative for the Asante Akim South constituency.

“The Free SHS policy has been a blessing for our community. We urge Dr Bawumia to improve our town roads when we vote for him,” Nana Owusu Ampehone said.

The NPP flagbearer’s campaign continues to focus on economic relief and infrastructure development as he seeks to secure voter support ahead of the upcoming elections.
