The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas), Dr. Ben Asante has called for investments in the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) to boost local production and expand Ghana’s role as a regional supplier of gas products.

Speaking at a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information on Sunday, 17 November 2024, Dr. Asante outlined plans to establish a modern factory at GCMC. The new facility would produce gas cylinders, accessories, and cook stoves to meet growing domestic demand and support exports across West Africa.

“By installing modern, high-tech facilities at the GCMC, we can meet the growing demand for cylinders and cooking equipment in Ghana and position the country as a leading exporter in the region,” Dr. Asante stated.

Earlier this year, President Nana Akufo-Addo approved the acquisition of GCMC by Ghana Gas. The move is seen as a strategic step toward bolstering the country’s gas infrastructure, increasing local manufacturing, and creating jobs.

Significant Cost Savings

Dr. Asante also announced that Ghana Gas has saved $250 million through its decision to employ local engineers for gas plant operations, rather than relying on foreign expertise.

“This is the result of a deliberate policy to empower local talent and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign engineers,” he said.

The cost-saving initiative has allowed the company to reinvest in training and skills development for Ghanaian professionals. According to Dr. Asante, this approach not only reduces operational costs but also supports long-term job creation and sustainable growth in the gas sector.

“Through this initiative, we are ensuring efficient plant operations while creating long-term opportunities for our local workforce to thrive,” he added.

Vision for Energy Independence

The call for investment and the focus on workforce indigenization come as Ghana seeks to reduce reliance on imports and enhance its energy security. Ghana Gas’ strategy aligns with the government’s broader economic goals of fostering self-reliance and strengthening local industries.

Dr. Asante’s vision is expected to yield significant benefits, including improved infrastructure, greater energy security, and job creation. With the acquisition of GCMC and a commitment to local empowerment, Ghana Gas is positioning itself as a leader in the country’s energy sector and a key driver of economic development.

As Ghana moves toward a sustainable energy future, Dr. Asante’s efforts are seen as instrumental in shaping the nation’s economic landscape for years to come.
