Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, has voiced concerns over recent developments involving Ghana’s judiciary, which he believes undermine public confidence in the justice system.

He expressed particular unease about the ongoing tensions between the judiciary and the Speaker of Parliament, describing some recent court rulings as “illogical and uninspiring.”

His remarks follow criticisms from retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba, who questioned the composition of a Supreme Court panel that ruled in favor of Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The case involved a challenge to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

Justice Atuguba called the panel’s majority ruling “predictable,” attributing it to the makeup of the judges.

Togbe Afede stressed the importance of an impartial judiciary, saying, “We want a judiciary that exists to protect all of us, ensure freedoms, and deliver fair justice. But recent happenings give us cause for concern. Some interpretations of the law simply defy logic.”

His comments add to growing scrutiny over the judiciary’s role in politically sensitive cases.
