The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has launched a nationwide strike today, Monday, 18 November, citing frustration over the government’s failure to address long-standing concerns about their conditions of service.

The union, which represents workers under the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, and public technical and traditional universities, says negotiations for revised conditions of service have been stalled for years.

TEWU-TUC has criticised the delays in concluding, signing, and implementing these agreements, leaving members dissatisfied and pushing the union to take industrial action.

In response, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has called for an emergency meeting with TEWU-TUC and other stakeholders. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 20 November, in a bid to resolve the dispute.
