The Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare, has strongly denied allegations that expired and repackaged rice was distributed to some Senior High Schools (SHSs) in Ghana.
Her comments follow claims made by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who alleged that approximately 22,000 bags of expired rice had been repackaged and supplied to schools. The allegations have sparked calls from the Minority in Parliament for legal action against Lamens Investment Africa Limited, the company implicated, as well as the Board and Management of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO).
Mr Ablakwa further accused the government of failing to act, despite a 2021 Auditor General’s report identifying Lamens Ventures for supplying substandard food products.
Responding to these claims, Mrs Osei Opare dismissed the allegations as “propaganda and rumour-mongering” and called for a focus on constructive initiatives. Speaking to Joy News on Monday, she said:
“You know it is not true, so please let us focus on things that move this country forward. We have good things to focus on—advancing opportunities for Ghanaian children and ensuring they become good citizens. Propaganda and rumour-mongering have no place in education.”
The controversy has added to growing scrutiny over food supply practices in Ghana’s schools, with calls for increased transparency and accountability.
