Former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urged the government on Tuesday to consider declaring a state of emergency if forecasts of heavier rainfall prove accurate, warning that Ghana’s worsening floods require an urgent, coordinated national response.
Speaking during a visit to flood-hit communities in the Greater Accra Region following Monday’s devastating rains, Dr. Bawumia said the prospect of additional downpours heightened the need for decisive government action.
“What is worrying for me is the forecast of even more rain to come. If more rain is expected, I believe the government should also consider declaring a state of emergency so that we deal with this in that particular form,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia called for a nonpartisan approach to tackling the country’s recurring flood crisis, urging authorities to bring together engineers, hydrologists, disaster management specialists and other experts to develop both immediate interventions and long-term solutions.
“This is a real big problem for the country. We have to put all our energies, all our talent, all the engineers and hydrologists together, regardless of party, because this is for Ghana. Let us come together for Ghana and solve this problem,” he said.
He also appealed for swift humanitarian assistance for residents displaced by the flooding, saying many families had lost homes and essential belongings. He pledged to donate relief supplies and encouraged businesses, civic groups and individuals to support affected communities.
“People need food; people don’t have clothes; people don’t have mattresses. Let us make sure immediate relief reaches them,” he said.
Describing the flooding as “a sad human story,” Dr. Bawumia said Ghana must strengthen its resilience against increasingly frequent flood disasters through coordinated planning and sustained investment in flood mitigation infrastructure.
