Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has issued an emotional apology after the Black Stars failed to secure a spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The team’s elimination marks the first time since 2004 that Ghana will miss the prestigious tournament.

Their hopes were extinguished after a 1-1 draw with Angola last Friday, followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Niger on Monday. The disappointing results left Ghana winless in their six Group F matches, scoring only three goals and failing to secure victory in any of their home fixtures. Sudan and Angola progressed to the tournament, leaving Ghana in disarray.

Addressing journalists after the defeat to Niger, Addo apologised for the team’s underwhelming campaign. “I am ready to apologise. I am so sorry that we did not do well and qualify. I am sorry because I know how it feels and how Ghanaians are hurt. I am so sorry,” he said. The statement marked a shift in tone from his earlier defensive stance.

The loss has prompted questions about Addo’s future as head coach. The Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council is set to meet on Wednesday to review the team’s performance and decide on the way forward.

The failure to qualify has been met with widespread disappointment across Ghana, with fans lamenting the end of a proud qualification streak.
