Sandra Thompson, the Secretary to the Board of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has expressed optimism that the productivity and efficiency of the Bank’s staff will significantly improve following the inauguration of its new headquarters, The Bank Square, in Accra. Speaking on behalf of the BoG staff, Madam Thompson conveyed gratitude to Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his two deputies for their leadership in bringing the project to fruition.
During her vote of thanks at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, November 20, she stated, “We are deeply grateful for relocating us from our 67-year-old cramped and overcrowded office to this magnificent structure. We now feel like Wall Street professionals; our demeanor, confidence, and work ethic will be transformed. Thank you, Governor and Deputy Governors. We pledge to match this incredible development with equally enhanced productivity and output.”
Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, described The Bank Square as a forward-looking project and a landmark that will play a pivotal role in enhancing Ghana’s status as a key player in Africa’s financial ecosystem. He emphasized that the edifice symbolizes Ghana’s emergence as an economic leader on the global stage.
“This building,” Dr. Addison said, “represents our investment in the future of the nation. Designed by Sir David Adjaye, an internationally renowned architect and a proud son of Ghana, The Bank Square is a testament to world-class architectural expertise. Adjaye Associates have created a masterpiece that not only stands as a beacon of Ghana’s progress but is also built to endure and inspire future generations.”
The Governor highlighted the symbolic and practical significance of the building. Clad in durable stone, it signifies resilience, permanence, and the Bank’s authority in the financial landscape. The building also meets high sustainability standards, requiring minimal maintenance while advancing environmental goals.
Standing at 100 meters tall, The Bank Square is now the tallest building in Ghana and the most advanced EDGE-certified sustainable structure of its kind in the sub-region. It is entirely powered by solar energy, showcasing the Bank’s commitment to environmentally conscious development. The complex comprises four interconnected buildings that can accommodate over 2,500 staff. It features modern office spaces, public banking facilities, a currency museum, a conference center, a 1,500-seat auditorium, and rooftop terraces.
Dr. Addison further noted that despite its innovative design and features, the cost per square meter of The Bank Square is lower than that of comparable projects in Accra, demonstrating the Bank’s prudent financial management. The construction also provided training opportunities for hundreds of local workers, equipping them with skills to deliver cutting-edge sustainable projects, further advancing modern construction practices in Africa.
“This facility,” he added, “is not just an architectural marvel but a civic building that reflects Ghana’s ambition and progress. It fosters collaboration, creativity, and efficiency, providing an ideal environment for innovation and excellence in modern central banking. We envision it as a hub where groundbreaking ideas will flourish, and future generations of Bank of Ghana officials will achieve even greater success.”
Dr. Addison concluded that The Bank Square is a monumental step forward for the Bank of Ghana, designed to honor the nation’s past, shape its present, and celebrate its future.
