Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 campaign team, has called for a public inquiry into allegations that expired rice was distributed to Senior High Schools across Ghana.

The controversy erupted after Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, accused officials of rebagging expired rice imported from India and distributing it to schools. Ablakwa has described the situation as “criminal conduct,” claiming some students have experienced health complications after consuming the rice.

Government officials, including the Chief of Staff and the Ministry of Education, have dismissed the claims as unfounded propaganda. However, Ablakwa has presented documents reportedly from the police and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) questioning the safety of the rice and recommending its destruction.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, Mr. Akomea said Parliament would be the most suitable body to investigate the matter. He argued that a thorough probe would help uncover the truth, address public concerns, and ensure accountability.

“Was the food contaminated? Was it expired? And if it was, how come it was still fed to the schools? I would like to see a proper resolution of these matters,” he said.

Mr. Akomea also noted the absence of reported illnesses among students as a significant point of contention, questioning whether the allegations of contamination were credible.

“Despite widespread reports, we haven’t heard of any adverse effects on students. If the rice was indeed contaminated, why haven’t there been such reports?” he asked.

The Vice Chairman called for greater transparency from authorities and urged that any investigation examine not only the quality of the rice but also the distribution processes and the accountability of agencies involved.

He added that while Parliament is currently not in session, it remains the ideal institution to conduct a public inquiry and summon all relevant parties.

“A detailed inquiry would restore public confidence in the education sector and prevent further damage to its reputation,” he said.

The allegations have sparked nationwide debate, with stakeholders urging swift action to address the concerns.
