Kumasi-based radio and TV host Oheneba Nana Asiedu has been granted bail by Ghana’s police after his arrest on Saturday, 23 November 2024, over allegations of spreading false information.

The Wontumi FM presenter was detained after urging voters, in a widely circulated statement, to cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate days during December’s general elections. Police say the comments, made on Friday, were false and posed a risk to public order.

Authorities have stressed that Ghanaian electoral rules require voting for all candidates to take place on the same day, describing the misinformation as a potential threat to voter confidence and electoral integrity.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has condemned the incident, underscoring the need for accurate reporting during the election period. It has urged the public to rely solely on official sources for credible electoral information.

In a statement, the police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability throughout the election process and warned media outlets against disseminating unverified information.

Mr Asiedu is expected to report to authorities regularly as part of his bail conditions, while investigations continue to determine the intent and potential consequences of his remarks.
