In a surprising turn of events, the saga over vacant seats in Ghana’s Parliament continues to unfold as MPs Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson sign a Memo to Speaker Alban Bagbin as ‘Majority Leader’.
After the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the NPP MPs, declaring Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four vacant seats as unconstitutional, one would have expected a resolution to the ongoing controversy over the Majority or Minority status in Parliament.
However, on November 22, Mr Afenyo-Markin petitioned Speaker Bagbin to recall Parliament for “high priority business of Government” to be considered, including tax exemptions and mining lease agreements.
In response, Dr. Ato Forson signed a memo as “Majority Leader,” urging the speaker to reject Afenyo-Markin’s request, stating that it is ill-timed and will be a needless drain on the Ghanaian taxpayer.
The situation in Parliament remains tense as the power struggle continues to play out.
