There was an alarming scene at Atasemanso Zongo in the Ashanti Region on November 26, when Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, allegedly pulled a gun on a group of young men.
Eyewitnesses report that the incident occurred after the MP was confronted by the youth, who demanded he honour a promise to donate GHS 5,000. The pledge was made after an event hosted by the Unity and Love Family, but the money was reportedly not delivered.
During a heated verbal exchange, one of the youths is said to have pointed what appeared to be a toy gun at the MP. In response, Dr. Amoah reportedly retreated to his car and retrieved a pistol, causing panic in the area.
Another eyewitness suggested that the confrontation escalated after the MP, who had been speaking to the youth about the dangers of drug use, was challenged over an unfulfilled pledge to fund an AstroTurf project. Tensions reportedly rose when the youth displayed what seemed to be a weapon, prompting the MP to act in self-defence.
The incident has drawn attention, raising questions about the escalation of political and social tensions in the region.
