Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South and former Minority Leader, has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for its decision to reduce the number of media houses allowed at collation centres, calling it a threat to Ghana’s democratic values.

“Any organisation that fears media scrutiny is undemocratic,” Mr. Iddrisu declared in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The EC has recently come under fire for introducing quotas that limit media access to election collation centres, citing concerns about order and security.

A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Iddrisu warned that such a move could undermine the nation’s democratic progress and hard-won peace.

“Let’s not take for granted the peace of this our beloved country and the pain we have taken to build our democracy for the past 30 years,” he cautioned.

His remarks reflect growing apprehension among political figures and journalists who view the EC’s restrictions as a step backward in ensuring transparency during elections. Critics argue that full media access to collation centres is critical for upholding accountability and public trust in electoral outcomes.
