Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has declined a request from the Majority Caucus to reconvene Parliament before the December elections. The Majority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had proposed holding an emergency session on November 28 and 29 to address urgent government business.

In a response dated November 26, Bagbin emphasized that the House would remain on recess until after the elections. He argued that national interests would be better served by allowing political parties, including presidential and parliamentary candidates, to focus on campaigning and presenting their manifestos to voters.

Bagbin noted that the parliamentary calendar already accounts for the election campaign period, and the government should use this time to justify its actions during the past four years.

“The request is accordingly declined,” the Speaker said, adding that Parliament would resume its sittings once the elections are concluded, to complete any necessary business before the transition to the next Parliament.
