More than 100 head porters, commonly known as “kayayei,” have been trained to operate newly commissioned electric buses in Ghana as part of a government initiative to empower marginalized groups and promote sustainable transportation.

The new fleet of electric buses was officially launched on Wednesday, 27th November, with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia taking a ride through the city in one of the buses, driven by a trained female head porter. This marked the culmination of a special programme designed to equip Kayayei with driving skills, enhancing their employability and improving their livelihoods.

Dr. Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasised the potential for the electric buses to reduce transport costs for passengers. “The fare for these electric buses will be 40 to 50 percent lower than current rates,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to affordable, sustainable transport.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to uplift marginalized communities while investing in human capital development.
