John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Ghanaians to vote against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections, citing severe economic hardships as a key issue.

During a rally in Ayawaso East, Mahama pointed to the soaring price of Kenkey, a traditional Ghanaian dish, as a symbol of the broader economic challenges facing the nation under the current administration. He criticized the rising cost of living, using the increased price of Kenkey to illustrate the government’s failure to manage the economy effectively.

Mahama recalled accusations made by the NPP, particularly by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, against his administration regarding economic management. He noted that despite those criticisms, the current government’s handling of the economy has resulted in even greater hardships for Ghanaians.

He urged voters to express their dissatisfaction at the polls, emphasizing that the NPP’s economic policies have not benefitted the majority. “We all remember what the NPP said about the NDC government. At that time, there was much peace in the country. Akufo-Addo claimed we were sitting on money while hungry, yet Kenkey was selling for GH¢1,” he stated.

“Now, three balls of Kenkey cost GH¢15, and adding one fish brings it to GH¢20. I remind the people of Ayawaso East that they have failed. It’s time for them to pack their things and leave,” Mahama added.

His remarks echoed earlier statements made during a campaign rally in Bodi, Western North Region, where he highlighted the significant rise in food prices as evidence of the NPP’s poor economic performance. He criticized the government’s inability to control inflation and provide relief to struggling households, stressing the importance of food security and affordability as key indicators of a nation’s economic health.
