Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has expressed strong concerns about the current administration of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), stating that its structure is hindering the success of the Black Stars.

In a recent interview, Vanderpuye, who is also the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, criticized the GFA for its role in the national team’s recent failures, particularly in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The Black Stars finished bottom of their group, securing just three points from matches against Angola, Sudan, and Niger.

Vanderpuye suggested that even top-tier managers such as Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would struggle to succeed with the Black Stars under the current GFA leadership. “If you hire Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp or any top coach and we don’t change the structure, we will still fail,” he said.

The former sports minister called for stronger intervention from the country’s Sports Minister, even going as far as recommending the disbandment of the GFA. “If I were the Sports Minister, I would disband the GFA,” he stated, adding that a six-month FIFA suspension could allow the country to reorganize and prepare for future competitions.

Vanderpuye also questioned the GFA’s decision-making, particularly regarding the firing of coaches following poor performances. “Why should we always sit and allow the GFA to sack the coach when the Black Stars fail?” he asked.

His remarks come in the wake of growing frustration over the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, a tournament Ghana has historically been a regular participant in.
