The Electoral Commission (EC) has described the special voting exercise, held nationwide on December 2, 2024, as smooth and incident-free, ahead of Ghana’s general elections.
Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research at the EC, praised the operation during an interview on Citi FM, highlighting the orderly and well-organised process. He noted that the event took place without any major disruptions, reflecting the efficient management of the exercise.
Tetteh commended the transparency and orderliness of the process, with voters adhering to the procedures at polling centres across the country. “Everything went seamlessly, with a high level of cooperation from all parties involved,” he said, adding that the turnout was encouraging, suggesting strong voter engagement ahead of the main elections.
The special voting, which is crucial for security personnel, election officials, and media workers, enables these groups to cast their votes ahead of election day to ensure they can perform their duties.
While the exercise was largely successful, there was an isolated incident in Bimbilla, where a temporary EC officer was arrested for allegedly photographing his ballot paper, raising concerns over electoral integrity. The EC assured the public that such breaches would be swiftly addressed.
The special voting serves as a key test for the EC’s preparedness to deliver a free, fair, and credible election on December 7.
